Self-Destructing in 3, 2…

My blog is set to self-destruct if I go too long without talking about hockey, so hurry! Say something hockey-ish!

Let’s see…today is none other than Sidney Crosby’s 21st birthday! That’s certainly heart-warming…okay, now let’s talk about real hockey players.

This is Wayne Gretzky Week on the NHL Network, commemorating the 20-year anniversary of Mr. Gretzky being traded from the Edmonton Oilers to the Los Angeles Kings on August 9, 1988.

And what is happening with a certain low-ranked team from Tampa Bay? My Lightning are busy practicing voodoo and witchcraft in hopes of a better season. Maybe I exaggerate a tad, but get this:

The Lightning believes a 47-foot tall ad space on the side of the St. Pete Times Forum is cursed. Well, not really. Then again… Mark Gullett, senior director of marketing, said never again will a player be pictured in the space at the corner of Morgan Street and Channelside Drive. Think about it. In 2006-07, the Lightning displayed goaltender Marc Denis, who was so bad, he was recently bought out of his contract. A recent Photoshopped picture of Steve Stamkos had to be replaced because the No. 1 draft pick was incorrectly portrayed as a left-handed shot. The adjusted picture included defenseman Dan Boyle, who, oops, almost immediately was traded to the Sharks. “That sign on the wall has been such a curse, we decided to have some fun with it,” Gullett said. So the current billboard features the Tampa skyline and has design elements specifically added, Gullett said, to “reverse the curse”. (Source:

I just knew it was all that damn billboard!

You don’t want to be on the cover of EA’s Hockey either. It does bad things. Just like the Madden curse. I just wish they would get out of the I can’t shave in the playoffs. Some men just can’t grow good beards. It probably itches too.

  3. Gotta love hockey superstitions… its good stuff 🙂 LOL I think the Bolts will come alive this year. They made some good moves in the off-season. Plus, Captain Mullet will not stand for last place. He just wont. 🙂 Pre-season starts NEXT MONTH!!! WOOO HOOOOO!

Don't be shy! Tell me how great I am. Or not. Share your feelings with the group.
