Dirt

This past weekend, Sunflower and Dove donned their kid-sized gardening gloves and joined me in the yard for some old-fashioned manual labor. As we yanked weeds, trimmed bushes, and laid to rest the plants that long ago succumbed to the heat (and my inadvertent lack of watering), I was proud of how eagerly they pitched in to help and lend a hand.

Then I learned why they really volunteered to help.

As Dove started working her little purple gloves off of her hands, ready to head back to the air-conditioning, Sunflower leaned in and urged her, “NO! This is a good excuse to get really dirty!”

She didn’t need to say another word. Dove wriggled her fingers back into her gloves and dived happily back into the dirt.

About TheSmirkingCat

I am endlessly trying to make sense of a world that has completely and unapologetically lost its mind.
